Re: 1963 exhaust pipe flange nuts
All of the ref to, 3829086, do not show a "lock" notation. However it always appear as the subject nut used, one such place is
for a 60-69 Corvair, so was being used in 1963 in that location.
It always appeared under a general heading of a lock nut type, such as "tension hex lock"- Top

Re: 1963 exhaust pipe flange nuts
The reason i ask is most people believe this lock nut was used on 1957-1962. The AM has the part# for 1957 as 3671946.I looked in the passenger car AM for 1955 and 1957 and it is the same part number 3671946 even on the 6cylinder cars.I have friend who has a 4,000 ,12,000 and a 13,000 mile 1955 cars . He is going to look at his cars to see if they have regular steel nuts .- Top

Re: 1963 exhaust pipe flange nuts
As stated, in the Standard Parts Book it is listed with ONLY "lock" nuts and is so labeled.- Top

Re: 1963 exhaust pipe flange nuts
The pic below is one I had in my file for original 63 parts. This is the style of prevailing torque (lock) nut used on 63 Corvette header pipe attachments, though it almost assuredly was cadmium plated (bright silver), rather than rusty.
There are several other styles of prevailing torque nuts used interchangeably with this one by GM, but its not likely they were ever on 63 Vettes.
Hope this helps:

Re: 1963 exhaust pipe flange nuts
Rotate it 90 degrees to the left, insert a . on the sloping edge, and it WOULD BE the illustration used in the 1971 STD PTS BK - 3829086.
