      The 42 degrees sighted is about 1/8 of a turn. As I recall allowance has been 1/4 turn. So any wear needs to be minimal to pass PV. This is also including the fit and squeeze of the screw securing the rod in the aluminum groove of the gear.

      A trick I do is reduce the center distance of the aluminum gear to the worm gear controlled by the steel plate. Elongate the holes to slots by about a 1/32” to close down the backlash between the gears. Use a star washer under the two screws as mentioned in original post. Tighten securely while biasing the steel plate to contain tighter mesh. One can make the slop way better than ever was as sold by GM. I don’t think there is a minimum required slop to pass PV.
