    M22 vs M21

    Hey all.
Was the speedometer cable on M22 and M21 on opposite sides? I can't seem to find any answers in the archives. Also, was there an adapter on M22?
    Thank you.
    Take care,
    Matt Lewis

    Generally no.

Early Muncies had the speedo cable attach to the left or drivers side no matter if it was a close or a wide ratio.

1965 and later had the speedo attach to the right or passenger side.

M21s and M22s are almost externally identical. Exception being the M22 had the lower boss on the right side of main case drilled and tapped for a threaded drain plug.

So M22s had the speedo on the same side as the M21s no matter which era/main case version.

There are a number of Muncies around that have been built from mix and match inter-changeable parts.

Keep in mind that all 1970-74 Muncies had the drain plug. So, for those years an M-22 cannot be identified by the presence of a drain plug.

I'm aware of that. I would never assume any Muncie was an M22 based on the presence of a lower drain plug as many racers took advantage of that lower boss and drilled and tapped it.
