70 Rear Bulk Head Carpet Opinions

I just re-read the new TIM&JG regarding the Convertible Rear Bulkhead Carpet. I did mine a number of years ago based an original carpet from another Corvette.

It had binding and below is what is now installed in my 70 Convertible with the binding.

The picture of what is installed is below.

Thoughts and Opinions wanted of judging purposes.

    Kind Regards, Bill

I think, and somebody more knowledgeable of interiors than me can chime in, but convertible with Astro-ventilation flaps were trimmed around them, without binding. Air Conditioned cars, without the Astro Ventilation flaps, had the binding all the way across. I think. Hope more people chime in.

More telling, will be the direction of the weave. Rear carpet goes front to rear, which I don't think anybody does.

Not to high-jack the thread, but are your seat belts original?

I was thinking that the upper edge and that "notch" near the end do not appear as I would expect.

Looking closely, per Gary, the weave does seem to go side-to-side.

Thank you. I am trying to decide whether to replace the carpet.

          Thank you Patrick,

I know it does not jibe with etc picture in the new JG but a mention is made that binding may be present on some 70s.

Any clarification on A/C versus non A/C convertibles.

I prefer the binding but if not on non A/C convertible I will trim as shown.

          Kind Regards,

          Bill

Gary may have access to a 1970 non-AC convertible; the only one I have locally has AC, and I replaced the carpet in it with the owner many years ago.

Look at 14.29 and 14.30. If you look at .30 there is binding showing under the AstroVentilation lip. In those pics plus 2.6 and 2.7 I think you can see the parts that were hand-trimmed as well as where the bindings remain.

I believe that the bound ends shaped into tabs (as shown in your photo) did not appear until 1971. An earlier JG edition had very good drawings of differences in bulkhead carpet for all 1970-72 years.

I have the earlier JG. I will take a look.

                    Gary,

The front seat belts are original and untouched. This 70 is one of the 500 convertibles with shoulder harness option. The shoulder harness belts were re-webbed with all original labels sewn on to the new webbing. Original webbing was trashed from going back and forth through the seat backs. The retractors are the originals but have been restored. The tongues are original and I opted to leave them rather than re-chrome. All work was done by Snake Oyl.

                    Kind Regards, Bill

                      Bill,
Please measure the length of your lap belts for Gary. Send him a PM for more details. Your car, with the shoulder belt option, is especially interesting for a survey we are doing.

My original carpet in #1889 Jan 1970 non a/c convertible was (crude) cut out for the astro vent. The welting was straight across the top on the tabs that bent around the lid hinges; as the old JG drawing shows. Here's the new, cut the same although straighter tan the original.

                          Bill,
My maroon 70 (6243) still has all the original carpet. I will try to stick my head in there on Sunday and try to get you some pics. Anyone know of anyone that has original front 70-71 carpet in good shape? I would like to acquire some.

                            Very Nice.

I kind of like the way they did it in 70. The hinge is covered.

                            Thank you,

I will when I get out in the garage. Working quite a bit these days. Hopefully get some measurements and pics today or tomorrow.
