1962 Corvette Top Configuration Grease pencil marking behind passenger seat.

I have a 1962 Corvette very original two top car that has never been restored. I removed the passenger seat to see the original grease pencil markings to denote the color and top configuration. After some light cleaning I seen the cars color clearly written in green grease pencil but there was no top marking denoting hardtop or soft top. My question is this: Did hardtop only cars receive "HT" and two top cars received no markings??? My car has no marking designation for top configuration. I know the history of my car back to the 1960s and it has always had two tops and the hardtop is definitely original to the car. So was there any exact procedure to these markings being applied or was it like other tasks during these cars production that had variances due to human application.

Matthew, On my 62 it only had the paint color and over the years I never personally saw one with a designation for the top.

      Eric,

What top or tops does your car have? This is example I have seen with the top designation.

Yes that photo is from my '62. It had both ST and HT.

I have never seen a ST designation, only HT where there was to be a hard top installed at the factory. Since this was done prior to paint, I'm guessing it was notification to drill/install a deck lid ready for the hardtop.

I wonder if there was a grease pencil marking for a power top? The deck lid would be different on a power top car.

Joe, What is different? If you're thinking of the Decklid Cylinder Hinge Nutplate, didn't all Decklids have those... regardless. My '59 Decklid has the nutplate, originally with no Power Top.

I originally thought that all decklids had the cylinder hinge nutplate, but I have observed C1 decklids without the nutplates. IF you have a copy of Bob Baird's latest 58-60 Corvette Restoration Handbook, look at page 667.

Joe, Interesting. I don't have the book but I never knew that.

Rich, attached is a photo of an unrestored 1960 without the 3 holes and nut plates for cylinder hinge attachment.
