Anyone Still Have Dealer Installed Glove Box Door Stickers? Memory Lane

    Hey Guys,

Here's a walk down memory lane. Check out these original glove box door stickers from Queen City Chevrolet in Cincinnati. I sure get a kick out of old 60's nostalgia. My car had these on the glove box door when I bought her many years ago.

Anybody else out there have any Queen City stickers or something similar to these from other cities?

I can only imagine some of these stains are due to spilled Orange Freezes from Howard Johnson's Drive-Ins way back when. Mike

I've got one on the glove box door of my Marhofer Chevrolet '67. I'll have to photograph it.

Those are nice stickers that they had made up. Was the car ever judged with them in place?

Re: Anyone Still Have Dealer Installed Glove Box Door Stickers? Memory Lane

        Tim and Brian,

        Thanks for posting!

Tim, It would be great to see how Marhofer Chevrolet made up their glove box door stickers. Would you post a shot or two?

Brian, no, my car was never judged with these stickers on the glove box door. But that's an excellent question. Now for the rest of the story.....

When I bought my '66 in Dallas back in '88 I was stationed in southwest Oklahoma. I was very new to the Corvette hobby back then. I immediately sent out for title searches in Texas and Oklahoma and bingo! I got 3 prior owners in Oklahoma. This began my lifelong search for the rest of the owners from December of '65 thru June of '76.

There was this sticker in the left hand cup holder of the glove box door that read "What To Do If You Have An Accident". It was stained and a little tattered, but I could make out Queen City Chevrolet Co. 414 E. Court St. And there was that phone number 221-1313. Remember, this was when computers were new and I didn't have one yet. No way back then to do simple searches. I had no idea where QC Chev. Co. was. No city listed on the sticker. And the phone number had no area code. So you can see how this racked my brain! And for a long time!!

Then I began wondering if this glove box door was original to the car? I eventually resigned myself into believing that it was. Glad I did. It was original. There was no Queen City Chevrolet listed anywhere when I called nationwide 411. Then one night I was chatting with a very nice telephone operator in Illinois and she said to me "You don't watch WKRP in Cincinnati" do you?" She told me that they often mention "Queen City" in the show. Five minutes later I had my answer after she connected me with the Cincinnati operator who'd lived there all of her life. She told me what street it used to be on, when and why it went out of business, and she even knew the owners name. She'd bought cars there!

Years later in Maryland around 1992, I was lucky enough to ask this police officer Corvette friend to "run the numbers" through the National Auto Theft Bureau. He told me that this trace will show where the car was factory delivered to, the name of the original owner, and if the car was listed as stolen. I nervously waited for his report. A few days later he called and said "I've got some good news and some strange news. The good news is your car's history is clean. The car was factory delivered to Queen City Chevrolet in Cincinnati, Ohio. But the strange thing is there's no original owner listed." He mentioned that when he'd done these searches before there'd always been an owner's name. Sadness!! Another dead end in my search. But at least I was positive where the car was originally sold. Recently through NCRS I ordered the factory shipping information that shows Queen City Chevrolet just for more documentation on the car.

About 7 years ago I was contacted (through the Driveline) by a guy up in central New Jersey who had a '67 coupe with the same sticker as I had in the left cup holder. He said his car had another one in the right cup holder. I had evidence of glue from an old sticker, but wasn't sure until he called me. The next day I drove up there and took these photos of his glove box door. He and his son were very gracious and I'm very grateful to them for allowing me to photograph their car. I'm certain that my glove box door looked just like this when it rolled out the door of Queen City Chevrolet.

I just bought an old '66 glove box inner face panel on-line. It's real nice and has it's original tire pressure sticker between the cup holders. I plan on reproducing these exact stickers shown and then glue them onto the glove box door for display in my shop. I'll post some photos when I'm done. Well, that's my Queen City Chevrolet glove box door sticker story. Ha, ha, ha. I hope some of you've enjoyed it as much as I did telling it.

So if anyone has some stories/photos to add to this post, please chime in. Like I said, I really enjoy this stuff. Mike

Great story Mike. I appreciate your passion for learning the history of your car.

Times have changed. I can't think of the last time I spoke with a telephone operator. Does a real person still answer when dialing "O"?

Re: Anyone Still Have Dealer Installed Glove Box Door Stickers? Memory Lane

            Good Evening Mark,

Thanks for the compliment! Yes, I've had a lifelong passion to find the missing decade of ownership of my '66. I'll never give up. I recently noticed that my longtime "Info Wanted" ad has been dropped from the Driveline. Gonna have to submit that again! Whenever I come up with a new angle for research, I try it out. I'm used to failures and I don't get frustrated. Every so often there's still a glimmer of hope. The Driveline ad I had running mentioned Queen City Chevrolet. That's how I was contacted by those good folks up in New Jersey with these glove box stickers.

I noticed from your profile that you own a '70 LS-5 coupe. Well, when I left Oklahoma for Andrews AFB, Maryland in '90 I immediately established some lifelong Corvette friendships. One of my new buddies was restoring his Monza Red '70 LS-5 convertible for which I became his wet sanding lackey. I've always had a desire to own a '70. And remember the cop that "ran my numbers" which positively identified my car as a Cincinnati car? One day he came out to visit and help disassemble the '66. He drove out in his medium blue (Bridgehampton?) '70 350/350hp convertible. Before he left, he said he was looking for a good home for her and wondered if I wanted to buy the car? He was going through a nasty divorce. I wanted to, but the reason I didn't was I honestly had no place to store the car. That's a decision that has haunted me throughout my latter years. The car was all there with complete documentation and owner history. A little worn, but all there. He said he would sell her to me for $8,000. That was in '92. Man!!

Take care Mark and enjoy that '70! Mike

Mike, I'll get a shot of the sticker. Yesterday was rain here in Austin and the car is on the top of my lift with another '67 under it. I didn't want to pull the bottom car out in the rain. If I remember correctly the sticker doesn't have the Marhofer name on it.

Here are two pictures of the sticker, this looks like a generic sticker for the optional compass. I don't see any evidence of a compass being installed on the dash, though.

                  Hi Tim,

Wow, I've never seen the glove box instruction sticker for the optional compass. Is there any evidence of the factory tire pressure sticker underneath it? The dealer must've had extra TP stickers and placed one in the right hand cup holder? What are your feelings on this?

Mike, the tire pressure sticker is there (in the photo). I'm not sure how they mounted the compass, but the dash and radio speaker show no evidence of any damage. This is a 39,000 mile Survivor.

                      Sorry Tim,

I plead ignorance when it comes to '67s. I've always wanted one, but I've become a '65 & '66 aficionado through the years. I'm away on business from my cars and books now, so I can't look up this answer. I thought the '67 had the tire pressure sticker centered between the cup holders as did the '66? Was this compass sticker installed by the factory or was it dealer installed? If it was factory installed, then this explains why the tire pressure sticker is in the right hand cup holder.

I find your post very interesting. I've never seen this configuration before.

Mike, my guess is this compass sticker was installed by the dealer. I'm not sure why the tire pressure sticker is mounted in the cup holder on this car, I have two other '67's and the tire pressure sticker is mounted in the center as you state. Maybe the installer was new and it seemed to fit so well........

I've been torn ever since I found my car last Yr----------------It still has the entry sticker on the front bumper from the past owner when he was in the Air Force in the late 70's early 80's. Super cool from Hanscom AFB in Mass. I know during judging I'll get hit with a deduction------Tough one.

                              Good Morning Fred,

Stickers added to the car after delivery are still tough to take away from the car, I know. My '65 that I bought from the original owner in '93 had a couple of them on it. I carefully removed them and are part of my documentation book of the car. I especially like the 1982 Washington D.C. inspection sticker that I removed from the driver's side lower windshield corner. It looks like it was made yesterday.
