    1956 Corvette engine survey

    Hi all;

I am continuing my survey of 1956 265 engine (all engines, not just Corvette).

    I need the following information

    1. The engine sequence number (of the form 0123456 (7 digits) from the engine front pad)
    2. The engine suffix code (of the form F56XY (where X = F or G, and Y could be blank or another letter)- from the engine front pad)
    3. The casting date of the block (passenger side rear top of block, where bell housing bolts up)

Feel free to reply here, send me a private message, or email me at emccomas57@gmail.com.

    Re: 1956 Corvette engine survey

    Ed,
Here are the numbers from my old 56 Corvette that I owned from 72 until 96. I submitted this info to Mike Hunt for his survey back in the day.

    VIN E 2607
    Venetian Red
    2x4, pg, pw, power top
    Block 3720991
    Casting Date C-28-6
    Pad Stamp 0484443 F56FG
    Door Glass dated Apr 56
I also have the original 225hp cam, lifters and rockers from this engine.

I also have a pass car engine:
    3720991
    Cast K 18 5
    Pad 0I69368 F56FB

      Ed,
I'll get my inventory book out (old parts) and give you my 56 #'s. I have 2 that I know of (265's) and I have one in my book that says 55. Might just be a late 55.

        Ed,
To answer your question previously, '56 V8 engine production of 918,919 was total for all GM engine plants. As you are probably aware Flint's engine production was approx. 5000 per day. At one time owned 0047754 F56FB cast J275 which was an engine 4475 prior to 0052229 cast J285 mentioned in previous thread. Because of high volume of production and shortage of warehouse space I have always felt there was a rough sequential correlation between engine and '56 Corvette assembly. A 2 month allowance between the 2 seems pretty average. Looking at your '56 list some engine vs vin #'s seems a little suspect. Are they verified original #s ?? Have '57 engine production #s if you ever want to attack that monster!

Do you have a copy of M Hunt 56 Corvette engine numbers? He logged over 50 of the 56 Corvettes by VIN # and engine number.

I agree that some of them look questionable. I am not questioning the data, just gathering it.
