    Another carpet install question 66

After viewing 50 plus carpet posts and still not finding my answer, I now look to you .

On the passenger side front; {1} Does the underlayment and carpet go only up to the edge of the lip of the duct work, or over the lip ?

{2} Is it a straight cut either way or can you add and or leave a little extra on either end ? In Other words follow the curvature of the duct work

Anybody got a great picture of that area completed ?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Re: Another carpet install question 66

Not sure if this helps, but my carpet on the passenger side comes up the foot well and touches the bottom of the heater box assembly. I wanted to hide the foam insulator that goes around the heater box on the inside. I lost one point at Regional with a comment "Long next to heater core & well".

      Don,

That gives me a better idea. Thanks .

Sure would like a good picture of that area by someone sure of their finish , or from an original carpet vette . Hint hint

        Jim,
My 67 coupe has the original carpet, but it is out of the car. I can take a picture of the carpet if you would like and I can put it back in the car and take a picture if necessary.
I think 67 is close to the same as 66.

            Jim,
It won't be much trouble, don't hesitate to ask if no one chimes in.

                Jim,
I should be able to do it in the next day or two.
It will be a nice break from cleaning the underbody.

Thanks a lot Pete, I do appreciate it !

So if I see this correctly , on your original carpet , The underlayment goes up to the lip and the Carpet actually covers The lip .

I wonder if that was the way Don Harris" car was , and if that's what he got dinged for ?

                      Jim,
In the picture with the carpet pulled back you can see the underlayment has been cut, I don't know if this was done at the factory or not. I don't think the carpet on that side had ever been removed before but who knows.
Where the underlayment buts to the bottom of the dash the carpet flap extends about 1 1/4".
If you want anything else let me know.

Here's a picture of the same area in my 66 coupe. I think mine looks pretty close to the same fit as Pete's, so I'm not sure what the judges at the regional saw that they didn't like.

I do have my jute padding stopping at the bottom of the heater flange, i.e. it does not touch the heater box. One thing that I see missing in Pete's pictures if the foam insulator (66 AIM UPC 1 ASM sheet D6 item #2). I had forgotten to install this foam piece when I was finishing the restoration and the interior judge at the chapter meet (he was a 66 national team interior judge) dinged me for that but he didn't say anything about the carpet being to long.

I installed the foam insulator before the regional meet. Not exactly easy to do after the fact, but I was able to get it installed.

                          Don,
My car has air conditioning. I think the configuration is a little different regarding the foam insulator.

                            Pete,

Thanks again for the effort and the confirmation.

                            Don,

Your picture confirms what I thought you explained in your first post . So I don't know what the Judges saw either .

As for the Insulator, you had me worried for a moment there, as you can't see mine either ! Pete hit it on the nose however , A/C cars use a different gasket. See UPC C60 A2 Item #1

Yep I see the difference with A/C versus non-A/C in mounting of the heater box and other bits.
