    Recommendations on fiberglass resins

I am about to begin repairs on my 64 Convertible body. I am not new to fiberglass repair, but this is the first Corvette body for me. I want to get professional results the first time and I am not in a hurry!! I have a few problem areas to tackle.

At one time in its life this car lost both half shaft u-joints and the front driveshaft u-joint and poked holes in the underbody. Some fool cut a window in the luggage compartment to access the differential to crossmember bolts. Some of the tabs around the grill opening are missing or damaged. Most of these areas were repaired with less than professional techniques. Thankfully most of the shoddy repairs are pealing off. Some of the areas will need to be ground down and completely redone.

I am asking for specific recommendations on the resin products to use.

    Polyesters or epoxies ?

    Any brands yield better results?

Dye additives to adjust the final color of fiberglass that will be left unpainted?

Well written Corvette fiberglass repair reference materials that I should investigate before I start?

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Re: Recommendations on fiberglass resins

I like to purchase from Fiberlay in Kent Wa. They have all the professional fiberglass products you will need. You can call in your order or order online from their web site if you don't live by one of their stores. There is a lot of information on their web site or their sales people are very knowledgeable and can answer your questions. I'm sure there is much more out there but that will get you started.

They were polyester when made . I sued Evercoat. You can get it any where . Just check the dates .Do NOT use if it is 6 months old

Look into West Systems products , they have worked well for me and they have containers with pumps so the mix is always right on. This product is used mostly in the boating industry but the resin is the same , it's the fiberglass material used that is different , use fiberglass mat and this resin and you should be good to go. Hope this helps Jeff

Dave, Whatever brand you choose, make sure you use a polyester resin with wax. The wax rises to the top of the resin and creates a seal so you will get a full cure. If you use a resin without wax it will stay gooey for months!! Also the polyester is the only resin that will break down the starch that holds the mat together.
