For the past few days, the M-22 in my '57 has been acting strangely. I will be out driving along at about 40mph +/- and then will start to slow down for a traffic light or whatever. At that point, the shifter will pop out of gear from 4th to neutral. Any idea what might be causing this? Thanks in advance.

Re: Muncie transmission is acting up...
A bad pilot bearing or input shaft bearing will cause the transmission to do this.
My assumption is if the bearing was defective you may have heard it. The bushing makes no noise of course.
Worn synchros (the part build into the gear not the brass blocker rings) is a more likely culprit.
But one starts with the cheap fix and work up!
This requires a new input shaft and synchronizer.
Not a cheap fix but one that works every time.- Top

Re: Muncie transmission is acting up...
I've had both Warner and Muncies do this but it was 2nd gear. In both cases the blocker rings were worn and new ones fixed the problem. I didn't find any other wear inside either one but they were a lot newer then. It's a great time to thoroughly inspect every internal component when you have it blown apart.
