    1963 & 1966 Hubcap Paint Specs

I'm restoring hubcaps for an early 1963 coupe as well as a 1966 coupe. My painter is having a hard time matching the paint. Can anyone provide a paint specification or information.

LIC has a good match for 1966. I believe its made by Seymour. Make sure your painter applies the paint dry instead of wet. Applying it dry will make a rough texture like original.

I believe you will need to find someone to custom match a color to match your caps. There were not paint codes or formulas for every color present on a car. Normally if you got interior and exterior colors that was all available. The hubcaps came from an outside vendor and their color quite possibly varied though the production period. Most colors available for accessory parts come from someone custom matching to an original part. If you get something in the general ballpark I doubt you would have a problem. The main consideration would be metallic size, they only used very fine metallic then and a larger size would be very apparent.

I used the rattle can paint that Long Island sells when I restored my 66 hubcaps. I made sure to replicate the soft edges of the painted areas. I believe these were done originally with some sort of mask and thus the edges are soft and not a crisp tape line with varying amounts of paint at the edges. I also sprayed dry with many, many light misting to get the correct texture. My car has been through a chapter judging (with some good C2 judges) and a regional with no issues with the hubcaps.

Pete, Michael told you the correct paint. Seymour from LI, it's very close.

The LIC paint is #45-02 used on 63-64 dash, 63-64 frosted hubcaps, and 66-67grill.

Tom, I wasn't asking for a paint code from the 1960's. I'm looking for a current paint code from someone who has restored some 63 and 66 hubcaps recently.

OK - I understand that Long Island Corvettes has a rattle can paint (#45-02) for the 63 hubcaps. How about a paint for the 66 hubcaps?

As I posted above, I used Long Island paint. They have paint for the 66 hubcaps (picture below). I have a number of 66 hubcaps, some with decent original paint and this paint matches very good to my eye.

Thanks Don. I know understand what you were trying to tell me about purchasing paint from Long Island. I'll give that a try.
