Corvette Club know-it-all claims my car is AO Smith

Would one of the experts settle a disagreement for me? A fellow Corvette Club member announces to about half a dozen local Corvette owners that my car is actually AO Smith (basically devaluing it as a fake) because it doesn't have a thumb sized dimple on the door jam. I attempted to point out the small dimple on my car vs the smooth jam on an actual AO Smith car, but he knows everything and says it should be the same size indentation as his '59.

I'm sure I'll see him at the next show and would love for someone like John Hinkley to set him straight. Normally, I don't let folks like him get to me, but sadly these folks look up to him for his "experience". He's a god, I'm a novice...

My 65 St. Louis car has the same dimple as your picture. My 65 A.O.Smith car doesn't have one. Just curious, don't you have a Trim Tag? The 1965 Judging Guide clearly points this information out. Get one for your 66 and show it to the "expert"

There are at least 3 other things that I know about that distinguishes a St Louis body from an AO Smith body. One would be nearly impossible to changs and another very difficult. Ask the fellow if he can point
        those out

The dimple for the power conduit to mount is not a reliable way to discern AO Smith to St Louis. Original known oddities are documented. Show your “friend” the trim tag, rivet in the door or the front belt line contour to better discern the body source. Sharing factual information is beneficial to both sides when a disagreement occurs.

why do you feel the need to justify your car to what sounds like a blow hard, know it all, but really know zip. i would tell him to buzz off myself

It's not so much to justify my car, it's more that I would like for his minions to see that he's not as well-versed as he has them all convinced that he is...the all-knowing.

Ironically, I was just at another car show and he was dressing down a '66 AO Smith car owner with side pipes and a stinger hood. This gentleman had overheard him questioning my car's validity the other day and put him in his place. Something to the effect of "I know my car didn't come with those parts, but I LIKE THEM! Instead of criticizing other folks cars because your '59 is made up of 10 different cars, how about you stick to what you know...which obviously isn't that much."

Let it rest - just ignore him. Keeping it going isn't going to end well. From what you have said about this "expert" he isn't going to agree with you, change his mind, or apologize. You know what you have - enjoy it.

There is an old saying "If you fight with a pig you both get dirty and it is tough to see who is who"; so I think that you are doing the right thing!

                      George,

I didn't see a picture in your original post. I would like to learn more about A.O. Smith vs. St.Louis bodies. Can you explain what the known differences are?

                      Dave
