What's the difference between wiper transmission and actuating arms?

Guys,

I'm restoring my wiper mechanism and looking at the TIMJG they speak of wiper transmissions and actuating arms. Which is which?

The transmissions are attached to the firewall with 3 screws. The actuating arms go between the transmissions and the wiper motor.
