Dan, I am not sure what you are asking here. Restate what it is you need and I am sure that someone will provide what you are looking for.

Re: 1957 Third member
Dan,
Have only seen Tonawanda passenger car pumpkins with red primer on them. Never a Corvette.

Re: 1957 Third member
our 57 pass car FI, a 210 post with its original block heads etc, had red oxide pumpkin when i restored it but all the c-1 differential housings i've restored were black. underneath some of the black, there were differing colors applied with a paint brush. mike- Top

Re: 1957 Third member
When I restored my '56, I painted the pumpkin semi-gloss black, applied the markings and then lightly dusted over the markings on the underside of the pumpkin with semi-gloss black to simulate the final black out process. I made sure that I shot the light dusting straight up from the bottom where the paint hit the bottom and some of the side markings and did not hit the top markings.Garry Barnes #18531

Re: 1957 Third member
Dan - my memory is not 100% but I seem to remember that several years ago this question came up and it concluded that the red primer was not used on Corvettes but was used on a limited number of other GM vehicles/service parts. In addition the complete rear axle (brake drum to brake drum) was painted semi gloss black when built in Detroit. It was then shipped to St. Louis for installation. Once it was installed on the car it was sprayed flat black along with the rest of the black out items. Thus, you probably would have a rear axle that is mostly flat black but might show some semi gloss and raw steel depending on how careful the man with the spray gun was. The inspection marks, as I remember, were under the semi gloss black paint when the axle left the Detroit axle plant. As I said, my memory of the details is not 100% but I am sure I saw this on this forum. Good luck.- Top
