Driveshaft and half shaft paint stripes on 69 SB 350/350 MT

    Guys,

I've searched the forum and all I could find was info on C2s. I just received the 5th edition TIMJG and maybe I'm missing something but there isn't much in there on this topic. Does anyone know what the paint stripes/daubs were on my setup? I've seen mention of paint daubs on the drive shaft and diff yoke that are meant to "match up" although from what I read they are different color stripes, but I couldn't find this info either in the TIMJG or on the forum. Thanks for any help you can give.

    Mike

OK so I re-read the TIMJG and I think I get it now. In 69 the stenciled part number replaced the prior year orange and green stripes as the way they identified the shaft, so 69's have no stripes. What about the marks on the end of shaft and the pinion yoke? Did these remain or were they also eliminated?

My opinion, based on what I have seen. Short answer is... the other marks remained. I have seen blue paint on the rear, differential yoke, once in a while I see yellow. Usually don't see anything on the transmission end. The half-shafts for your 350-350 were probably plain, no markings. Those with the heavy-duty rear end (427s) often are seen with a green paint swipe on them. The heavy duty rear ends used steel-shot blasted half shafts and I think the green stripe identified that. Standard rear end used natural finish half shafts. Others will chime in with there opinions, what they have seen.

Looks like we need to add this to the manual.

Ok Gary thanks. So blue on the diff yoke...anything on the driveshaft? I've read at least maybe with other years that there was also a stripe on the driveshaft and the workers on the line were supposed to line those two marks up when installing. Is that the case also with '69?

The blue paint would be on both the yoke and the drive shaft end. Usually it's just a daub of paint , not long stripes or line.
I'll look in the morning through my pictures and see if I can find one. They are on my shop computer.

Some different cars with different colors. Also have pictures of a pink daub of paint, several pictures of green, blue, yellow.
So, I guess choose a color you like best.

A picture of an automatic front yoke. Yellow with green over it.
Yellow daub on the shaft is the same car, at the rear differential.
Pink daub of paint is from a 70 automatic, rear differential. Did they use different colors or different options? Don' know. Have not seen a pattern to be honest.
