    BW T-10 overhaul

Would like to have my original 1962 BW T-10 overhauled with new bearings, seals, gaskets and other parts, as needed, by good, experienced transmission expert in reasonable driving distance from central Texas. Today, I contacted Kajun Jon (Jon Bergeron) of Whitney, Tx, only to learn that he has ceased doing transmission work but still in the business of selling parts.

As I recall the transmission was working ok some years ago before a collision disabled by '62 which I have owned for over 50 years. I am mechanically astute but don't feel all that confident in the disassembly, inspection and re-assembly process that will be required in overhauling this transmission.

Any suggestions from fellow Texas Chapter members, or any others for that matters, would be greatly appreciated.

Larry Fischer at D&L Transmissions (www.muncie4speed.net) . Don't let the web address fool you; they do T-10's, too.

Another good source is Ed Hartnett. I believe he's in PA but I'm not sure and I'm not sure if he's still doing transmissions.

Thanks to all who made recommendations but was hoping for some person or business much closer to Austin, Tx. Kajun Jon recommended Allstate Transmissions in San Antonio which is more what I had in mind but don't know anything about that business.

Ask them if they have experience rebuilding T-10's (more than one here-and-there). If they do, they'll probably be OK. It's really not all that difficult to rebuild a T-10. No special tools are even required.

              Thanks, Joe

Allstate Transmissions, aka Allstate Gear, Inc., appears to be well-established business and appears to have lots of "gear" experience and parts. At least that's the impression I get after reviewing the website this morning.

Will certainly inquire about their experience and work with T-10s.

Sure, is a lot easier, to rebuild the transmission with a dummy cluster shaft to hold the needle bearings in place. Especially in the summer when the grease is thin as the rollers tend to fall out of the cluster easily. It is also handy if one is lacking experience. The dummy shaft is just a little under size so it can be removed through the shaft holes in the case. And it's short enough to be installed with the cluster, and helps keep the thrust washers in place. Beginners sometimes push the factory cluster shaft through from the incorrect side and end up over-sizing the hole for the cluster shaft. It is larger on one end. This results in an oil leak. The other issue many aren't familiar with is the gear synchronizer teeth (they are part of the induvial gears) have to be in good condition or the transmission will pop out of gear. Many think the brass synchronizer (blocker rings) perform this function they do not. Often it is prudent to consider new guts on high mileage units. Like many Corvettes they have been road hard and put away wet. If yours works well now and you only need new bearings you likely will not have any hard part issues. There are a lot of difference in the bearings provided in the kits. GM put in a maximum construction bearing on the input shaft. Most kits now include a Conrad style bearing for this shaft. It has fewer rollers and carries a lower radial load rating. It is also about half the price of the original bearing. So if you see large discrepancies in kit pricing you now know why. GM was not known for over designing anything. I would consider using the GM OEM style bearing. Another difference is the case prep. Many re-bilders just clean them in a parts washer. Perfectly adequate but if you want the OEM New look you have to tumble or otherwise prep the case.

Thanks, Richard, for your comments and recommendations. Do you know where I can purchase the dummy cluster shaft. I can check with GM parts to see what bearings are available. Seems like I read something about new/improved synchronizers over the past years but do not recall any specifics and don't know where to inquire. Are you aware of anything in this area? If I end up tearing the transmission apart for inspection and re-assembly, only want to do it once.

I would not look to GM for bearings, just be cogitative about the differences in quality, i.e. don't purchase on price alone.
Muncies have both 7/8 and 1" shafts in the counter gear. BW-T10 have two different shaft sizes. The breakdown may be between the T10 and the Super T10. This is unconfirmed.
You have to know the year or measure the shaft to know which dummy shaft you need. I suspect the Kent Moore tool has been out of production for some time. Contact me off site for more information on the dummy shafts.
