How good are these "Car Wraps" I been hearing about for Corvettes or Camaro's?

Been hearing/reading a lot about "Car Wraps". Has anybody ever seen one on a Corvette or Camaro?? How good are they in comparison to a good paint job? Larry P.S. Obviously they would never pass judging but how would they be on a "Driver"?

Here's one that was done for a Corvette that was seized from a drug dealer and became an Albuquerque police car. Pretty spectacular graphics, if that is what you want:

Thanks for the reply>Not talking about graphics; what to know how it compares to a stock paint job on whole car.Larry
P.S. A good example would be if owner had a blue car but whats to change to red w/o destroying the original paint.

They look fine (if done by a professional), but you're never going to fool anyone that the car has been painted. I've seen plenty on high end cars (think matte finish) and, again, they look fine.

I watched a show Unique rides. They did a 2 door expensive passenger car. The cost was 10K and it was said to last 3 years.

Every year at SEMA there are several exhibits of cars having wraps applied. I never really paid much attention to the installation but they do look great. Can't help you with the cost or longevity but if what Bill posted is accurate, I'd go with paint.

A friend of mine just had his 65 Olds F85 done and it looks good. The main thing is having the car prep good just like painting, it's only as good as the body work is. The wrap cost him about $2500. A MAACO paint job may be cheaper and may look just as good.

I have not heard of anyone doing a wrap as just a common paint job and being happy. It is mainly for graphics and complex custom designs.

Funny last night on velocity there was a show that had a 67 Caddy with a wrap. They had to remove the wrap to paint the car. It looked like as much work as it takes to strip a Vette with a razor blade. They also pointed out that the metal really has to be rust free before installation or it will grow under the wrap just like a vinyl top.

A friend of mine just bought a Mustang Cobra R, Maroon and had the whole car wrapped in CLEAR. It was undetectable unless closely inspecting it. Cost 4000.00

There is a Vette here in Dallas with wrap. From 50' looks like nice solid color paint. Up close you can tell it is wrap around the edges.

I avoided adding my 2 cents because I thought clear wrap (or "clear bra" as it is sometimes called) might be a different product.

On my 2008 C6 I have had the front clip, rockers, lower doors and rear quarters up to the wheel opening covered in clear material for now a few months short of 10 years. No issues and it has protected the paint in some extreme conditions. 87K miles on the car now and no stone chips or yellowing. However, I am still not sure if this is relevant to Bill's question. The colored material might be different than the clear product, but I offer my experience on the chance they are the same material.
An added bonus to this material: I was hit in the rear passenger wheel two years ago on the way to the Rhode Island National. The wheel/tire took the brunt of the contact, but the plastic wrap in front of the wheel opening was smudged. I will have that plastic replaced this winter (I hope), but there is no damage to the paint. The plastic was designed for stones and bugs, not contact/rubbing, but it did a fine job protecting the paint. Replacing it is a small burden compared to trying to match the modern tinted clear paint systems.

Terry agree my sons CTS V is clear wrapped front fenders hood and valance and has lasted for years. he had a minor side swipe and now will have to repair fender and replace wrap. I do not remember the separate cost of the wrap. But with body work and paint is 2500$. You are right on the color the wrap always seems different.
