72 drivers door stuck
I have been working on the latch mechanism on my 72. Trying to decifer how the rods are assembled. In the process I got the door 1/2 latched now I can't get it to unlatch to get the door open. I can do it on the pass. side by reaching down in the door with a screw driver and tripping the latch mechanism, but that method does not seem to want to cooperate with me on the drivers door. I have done this many times on the drivers door in the past but now it wants to argue the point. Any Ideas????

Re: 72 drivers door stuck
Something failed in my 69 door latch last week and I can't get the driver's door open. It feels like the lock portion isn't releasing. With the window down I can see much of the latch assembly. The locking rod is clearly accessible and is almost vertical where it is attached to the latch. Moving it up releases the lock. I tried manipulating the the mechanism to no avail. Looking at the passenger side it looks like a small spring is missing from the lock portion of the latch. I plan on buying a replacement latch to better study the workings to see if I can get it to open. I'm worried that I may have to resort to pulling some inside trim and hopefully access the striker pin with a sawzall. I'll be watching this thread for any ideas or solutions.- Top

Re: 72 drivers door stuck
Hi Mr. Brown
I finnally got my door to cooperate. What my problem turned out to be was one of the latch rod clips had fallen down into the mechanism and would not allow full travel of one of the latch levers. For your situation my 72 should be the same (or close to yours). Any form of visual in side the door with the aid of a flashlight. You will see where the rod from the inside door latch attaches to the mechanism. It operates a lever that trips the door latch. Reach down into the door with a lengthy screw driver and push its contact arm down and that should unlatch the door. That being said it is a lot easier with the door panel removed exposing the inspection cover in the upper rear of the door frame. Removing the cover exposes the latch mechanism in all its glory. With that cover plate off operate the latch with the inside door handle and you will see the lever and its contact and how it unlatches the door.
Good luck with it.
