My friend with a 78 Corvette and just rebuilt the front end of his car with a comprehensive kit that included the tie rods and a new sleeve.
The directions directed the installer to grease the threaded ends of the tie rods and then screw into the sleeve.
The sleeve, clamps and the ends are all new replacements. Even when over torquing the clamps the sleeve(s) can be turned by hand. I consulted my 63 manual (same parts) it didn't mention anything about greasing the LH and RH threads. I suspect the grease shouldn't be there and is at least some of his issue. The clamp are close to the end of the rods, but they didn't mention anything about aligning the bolt on the clamp with the slot in the sleeve. That wasn't done, open end was pointed down for best access. I suspect his aftermarket directions are misleading. I recently assembled my 63 using the parts that came on the Corvette in 63. After power brushing the rod ends and tapping both sides of the sleeve it was impossible to turn the sleeve by hand. Yes, I have both a LH and a RH 5/8 NF taps. I put my parts together dry or with a couple drops of oil. Anyone else had this experience? What would you recommend?
Thanks in advance for any input.
Rick
