I want to replace the badly etched rear view mirror in the 72. I was sure it was original but everything I read says it should have a black back and mine is stainless. I just received photos from the original owner when it was new. One photo from the from shows reflection from the chrome AND what appears to be the stainless mirror when new. Are there others with the stainless in 72 or is this just a leftover piece stuck on the car. How would ncrs judge the stainless?

If your 1972 Corvette was built in calendar year 1971 (that is the build date of the car is before January 1) it should have the stainless steel backed mirror. Later cars got the black backed mirror.
BTW: This is covered, along with the reason for it, in the 1970-72 TIM&JG (Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide) available from the NCRS store. There are lots of answers in there to questions you haven't even thought of yet.Terry- Top

If memory server me early 72 production or cars produced in 1971 may have the stainless steel earlier type mirror. Your best bet would be purchase the latest 70-72 Judging Guide if you have not done so. You will most likely find many answers you need in there.- Top
