How do I check if the freon in the A/C unit is low and needs freon added?

If the unit needs freon added; how is this done?

Jerome, there are a couple ways, one is a gage, the other is the site glass on the receiver dryer. Depending on the outside temp the low side pressure is generally about 28-34 psi ( using R-12). the cooler the outside temp. the lower it will be the hotter the higher. the site glass will show some bubbles when low and the compressor is running, always give the site glass a minute or so for the pressures to equalize.

There is a lengthily and thorough description of testing the AC System in the 1972 Chevrolet Service Manual. If you don't have one I would encourage you to get one. When the NCRS Store was in Cincinnati these manuals were available from them. I am not sure if that is still the case, but check the drop down menus at the top of this page for the NCRS store to find out.
