prepping 69 headlight bezels for paint

I have my bezels cleaned, primered with the ugly green zinc chromate, and then lightly wet sanded. What's my next step? Red oxide primer, gray primer, go directly to color, or ???? Thanks.

If it were me, I'd remove the zinc chromate, especially if it came out of a rattle can. A good quality epoxy, not the rattle can type, is far superior in every way.

Jim, do you know a supplier? All the body shop supply companies we deal with have something similar but in gray, but it is not zinc chromate. The paint I got I purchased at a marine supply place.

I guess for originality, it's good to have chromate (if that's what that green finish is) on the back side (if that shows).

Paint finishes work as a system, so it's best to use a primer-surfacer from the same brand designed to be top coated with the specific line of paint you're using.
