Rear vent blackout on 72 convertible

I need some help on the blackout on the rear deck grills. The judging manual states the mounting surface is blacked out but the sides are not. So is the side portion that is on both sides visible through the grill left body color? Just the front and back portions visible through the grills blacked out?

There is a photograph of the rear deck vent black-out in the 5th edition 1970-72 TIM&JG. (Fig. E 16.7) One can see the black paint on the bottom of the grille opening (look between the bars on the grille). Due to the way the production mask fit the opening, there is usually no black paint on the sides (vertical surface) of the opening.

If one looks into the opening one can often see a shadow of the original color on the bottom of the opening, but that bottom is several inches below the rear deck surface. Some have postulated that one could determine if the painter was right or left handed by the shape of that shadow on the bottom of the vent opening. I will leave that determination to others more detail oriented.

Mike, this area is regularly judged by Exterior Judge John Ballard at Regionals and Nationals, also looked at for correctness, the screws and clips, so its good to pay attention to this area.

        Hi Edward,
Speaking of the clips! Would they have been in place before or after the blackout process? When I removed mine on my 73 there was bare fiberglass underneath them.
        Thanks,
        Jimmy

The clips on my 72 convertible were painted black. So it appears they were in place when blackout occurred.

Jimmy, my take is there was no paint on the clips, The clips I thought were installed after the paint and black out.
