It would be helpful to know the year of Corvette the unit came off of -- or the year on the casting date.
I would have to look it up to be sure (since we don't routinely judge differential stamps I am rusty on the subject), but until 1970 or 1971 the date was simply stamped MM DD YY, but beginning in later 1971 or 1972 MY the code became a Julian date. I suspect this is the latter and is the 299 day which is October 26.

Terry, I believe you are correct with the Julian date. W=warner gear

I cheated and looked it up in the TIM&JG since I had it out anyway to answer another question.

1970 MY used the date code = MM DD YY
1971 & 1972 MY used the Julian Date system, so the referenced code would be from a 1971 or later MY Corvette.

Hi Terry: I guess I'm a little rusty on 71-72. Earlier were no brainers. That makes total sense because it is without a doubt original to the car and the car was built November 1, 71 and of course is a 72. Just got this car home and nearly everything is original including all the paint! Looks like it is going to buff out pretty nice and I will ignore the scratches. Finally a car I can walk away from and not worry about a new scratch.

Don't feel bad. I knew it changed, but I had to look up when.

That is neat. October 26 differential assembly on a November 1 car. They were putting those things together at a fantastic rate in those days. While you are critical of the car any chance it is original enough for Bow Tie? We love to see those old bones, you know.

If you think that was quick, how about 10/12 block casting date and 10/13 engine build with the 11/01 car build. I will have to check out the bowtie award. Ca car and I have some paper work from initial smog and pre delivery sheet to pop and every other piece of delivery paperwork. Some maintenance records too! first owner at least 26 years. haven' checked for build sheet yet. 80,000 really cared for miles. car was akin to a barn find. last oil change and brakes was 20 years ago with 400 miles the last 20 years so I've got some work to do!

Nice engine dates. Don't forget the engine plant was making engines for other Chevrolet car lines also.

Be careful cleaning it. We like all those paint marks and stencils and lumber crayon marks.
