    Drive shaft mounting to differential

    Guys,

I'm installing my driveshaft and for some strange reason both my original and a replacement set of straps are not fitting. It's clear the straps are too wide for my rear differential yoke. The yoke measures 1 7/16" and the driveshaft straps are 1 9/16". In addition, the straps I ordered came without nuts, indicating to me that the factory yoke must have been threaded, but this yoke is not. I'm trying to be as correct as possible with this resto but I'm not going to pull the yolk off the diff. Not sure how this happened, guessing maybe the yoke got swapped when it went out to be restored, which, BTW, was done by one of the leading resto guys who advertises in the driveline. At this point I just want some straps or u-bolts that will work. Any advice?

Mike you should call the rebuilder and get the correct yoke.

Vette diffs came with either 1310 or 1330 pinion yokes. The fast way to tell what you have is just look at it. If the u-joint is retained by U-bolts it is a 1310, with the exception of a 63 Gran Sport which used bolt and caps on a 1310. The 1330 uses bolt and caps.

      Gary and Michael------

It's even easier for 1968-70. If the car is a manual transmission it uses the 1310 u-joints and u-bolts with nuts for u-joint retention. If it's a THM-400 it uses the 1330 u-joints with straps and standard hex bolts for u-joint retention.

For 1971-75 all transmissions used the 1330 series u-joints with straps and hex bolts.

Thanks Joe. That definitely makes things easier.

Well, I'm not so sure of that. Straps/hex bolts are much easier to install than u-bolts/nuts.
