1963 am wonderbar radio

What is the tube that is on the side of the radio that has a wire coming out of the end? The wire then goes back into the radio. Does it have anything to do with the wonderbar function?

Jeff that is the bulb that sticks into the end, that lights up the face plate. I think this what your explaining.
