    Air tool lubrication

I just purchased air tool lubricant, and wondered why this lubricant is special. It appears that air tool oil is vegetable oil based, and safer to breath.

    Ken,
I hold my breath because I found that ATF does a great job and wont get thick in the tool if the tool is not used for a long time.

In the past I have used Marvel Mystery Oil in my impact wrench. But I try to use NAPA brand air tool oil when I can.

I was just advised (by the snap on rep) to run spray de-greaser/cleaner through my defective Snap-On air wrench.
It was a no longer supported model and I had little to loose.
It did free up the air motor.
After that I ran some ATF through it.
        Works like new.

I suspect for general Automotive work the newbies are using cordless tools not air.
I am not including heavy industry and truck in this category.

45 years using Marvel Mystery oil.
I use it in air tools before putting the tools
          away.

I like Marvel Mystery Oil for a lot of projects around my shop. it does an excellent job of freeing up sticky, gummy throttle linkages and works well on rusty, moving parts also. I know that the Chevy dealership I worked at used it sometimes to free up sticky hydraulic lifters in neglected engines. This practice dated back to the fifties when Chevrolet advised dealers to use it for that purpose. I have used it to free up stuck air tools myself and it does work well. I recently learned my FLAPS carries MMO air tool lubricant in a small bottle. Looks just like regular MMO so I don't know if it is something special/different or just clever marketing. I will say it does look suspiciously similar to the tried and true kerosene/ATF mixture everyone brags on, so the formula may not be as mysterious as implied. Chip.
