    Tires and Judging Manual 1964

Under 20. TIRE in the judging manual it indicates Service Replacement Tires can be used for judging. Is that correct, that I could use 205/75/R15 radial with 1" w/w in place of a 6.70 x 15 bias ply? Could I get any style Goodyear w/1" w/w and that would suffice since they were one of the OEM manufacturers? I want to be sure before purchasing.

John, the only way to not loose any points is to have original non-dot tires. Original looking tires from Coker or others with have DOT on the tire. For that you loose 10% which is 3 points. Four Coker tires and an original spare will be a 2 point deduction.

Saying that, there are standard deductions for tires. The tires you are looking at is greater than a 10% deduction but I can not recall the percent as I am away and my standard deduction sheet is at home.

Someone else will respond I'm sure.

John, its 30% with the OEM tire maker ,which could be a radial.

Not sure Goodyear still makes a whitewall in 205-75-15. I think Uniroyal still makes a tiger paw with a 3/4" whitewall. Otherwise it's the expensive repop whitewall radials if i'm not mistaken

I have a '64 convertible with Goodyear 205/75-15 black wall radials as road tires and a repro Goodyear black wall bias ply tire as a spare. At the 2014 NCRS National Convention the tires received the standard deduction or 14 points out of a possible 30 for originality and 0 points deducted for condition. I do not like white wall tires and have found that it is hard to locate the correct width white wall radials or black wall radials. I purchased the tires I have from Wal-Mart and had a local tire shop that I trust mount and balance them. I drive my car(s) to the NCRS events so radials is the only way to go. I make up the point deductions with mileage points.

I will add that before I installed the correct size Good Year radials I had 205/75-15 Michelin black wall radials as road tires and the same Good Year bias ply black wall as the spare. At the North Central Chapter Regional in May of 2012 I had the car flight judged with the Michelin black wall radials and received a deduction of 18 points for originality and 0 point deduction for condition.

I hope this information gives you an idea of what you can expect during flight judging with OEM service replacement and non-OEM service replacement radial tires.

          Regards,

The NCRS standard deductions for tires are as follows:
4 matching OEM tires and 1 OEM spare no deduction
Reproduction OEM brand with DOT 10% deduct
OEM brand type and size differ slightly from original 20% deduct
OEM brand which differ considerably from original 30% deduct
Non OEM brand having correct size and sidewall specifications 40% deduct
Current day OEM brand service replacement size with correct white wall size 60% deduct
Same as above non OEM brand 75% deduct
For all others or those with white wall mounted inboard 100% deduction
Based on that the deduct for radials of an OEM manufacturer would be 60%

I believe a radial in place of a bias ply will be a 60% deduct with the latest standard deduct chart. DTD June 2017 (rev. 5.0)
