    Windshield tinted

What is the correct windshield for a tinted 77 car. Had insurance install last one but the glare is to intense on a sunny day. Are there differences ? My 75 roadster and coup never had such a glaring issue!

    Frank,

First determine glass manufacturer. Somewhere on glass is a "DOT xyz" number (DOT requirement). Look-up DOT number on internet or post it here. Actual glass manufacturer will give some clue as to quality. Yes there are differences.

Does windshield have "flat spots"? i.e. do wipers clear surface of water? Modern front windscreens have compound curves - they curve top-to-bottom and side-to-side. Windshield wipers and blades are designed to accommodate these curves. When glass has "flat" areas (i.e. NOT compound curve) the wiper blade rides up-and-over area and will not clear glass of water. Flat spots (areas where wipers do not clear glass) are indicator of poor quality.

        Frank,
Web search (http://www.carwindshields.info/dot_db) indicates DOT55 is "Globe-Amerada Glass Company of Elk Grove Village, IL. Globe-Amerda shows up on Google as replacement auto glass - no indication of actual physical manufacturing location. No reviews show up either.

DOT 15 Libbey-Owens-Ford was exclusive Corvette glass supplier 1953-1982. LOF was sold to Pilkington UK in 1986. Pilkington subsequently was acquired by Nippon Sheet Glass (NSG) in 2006 and they dropped the LOF identifier. Subsequently NSG consolidated their various automotive glass companies under the "Pilkington" name and they sell LOF DOT 15 logo glass as Classics. (Pilkington invented float glass and is well known world-wide.) As such, Pilkington Classics is the successor company to original Corvette glass and most likely the best quality.

You might check with local replacement glass shops - some refuse to install some DOT # as they can't stand customer complaints and call-backs.

"Glass Shaved Sun" would reference trademark of Globe's shaded glass. "AS1" indicates clearest/high-quality glass used in windshields. "M66" refers to Globe's internal manufacturing process. M66 for Globe may/may not be same process as "M66" on LOF/PPG/ASAHI/etc.

            Frank,

Safety restrictions (% darking) on tinted windshields. (Also restrictions on side and back glass, although seems to be widely ignored. ) Try polarized sunglasses. Polarized (vs darkened) glass removes glare (reflected light). Polarized sunglasses NOT good for heads-up-display as heads-up projects (reflects) information off the windshield.
