Or contact Gary Beaupre, also a TDB regular.

Both will have what you seek.

Or David Sokolowski in So CAL. He has boxes of both. Old Original used and NOS.

          Tim,

To answer the first half of your question, there is no reproduction '66 spare tire lock that will pass judging muster. A nice, used GM original or NOS is the only way to guarantee full judging points. And regarding NOS, in 15+ years of continuous and vigilant looking I have seen one NOS example, so they are rare indeed.

              Tom,

              For '66, yes.

There were 3 different part numbers for the locks available in GM SERVICE over the years. The 1963-64 lock was GM #3794103. The 1965-66 lock was GM #3867322. The 1967-82 lock was GM #3912416. All of these are functionally interchangeable and each replaced the former for SERVICE. The 3912416 was supplied with different keys, though, over the years of its availability. Initially, it was supplied with the Briggs & Stratton style, "round" key. Later, it was supplied with the GM "Mark of Excellence" style, oval key. Of course, if the lock is to be matched to the car's existing key, any of the NOS locks would have to be re-coded.

                  Joe,

I also have notes for 1963 tire locks with part numbers 3794104 and 3832480. What is your understanding of the history of those part numbers?

I have no record of GM #3794104 and 3832480 as having ever been SERVICE-available part numbers (i.e. parts that someone could find NOS). If they existed, they were probably PRODUCTION-only part numbers.

                      Joe,

My notes don't say where I got those two part numbers from, but, like you, I can only guess they are production-only numbers.

Do you know the dates when those three part numbers were first available in service and when they were discontinued from service? All I know is that 3912416 was GM discontinued from service within the past 2 to 4 years.

Gary/Joe - I'm wondering if the p/n 3794104 Lock Unit was for the unit with the spare tire lock without the drain hole & the p/n 3832480 was for the Lock Unit with the spare tire lock with the 1/4" dia. drain hole. The 1964 AIM I have shows SPARE WHEEL LOCK, SECT. 10, SHEET 4.00 & p/n 3794103 LOCK CASE & CYLINDER ASM. (PART OF 3832480 LOCK UNIT). Was p/n 3794103 a SERVICE-available p/n? Pete

GM #3794103 was first available in SERVICE in August, 1962. It was discontinued and replaced by GM #3867322 in March, 1965. GM #3867322 was discontinued in July, 1967 and replaced by the GM #3912416. I don't have a discontinuation date for the 3912416 but it was within the last several years.

The fact that the 3794103 and 3867322 were discontinued so long ago is the primary reason finding an NOS example is so difficult today. When a part has been discontinued for 50+ years, the NOS supply pretty well dries up.

Yes, GM #3794103 was a SERVICE-available part number. I doubt that the drain hole was a difference between the 3794103, 3794104, and 3832480. More likely, the latter 2 part numbers differed by some sort of coding. In fact, I do not know if the 3794103 and 3867322 were actually supplied coded with keys. They may have been only the un-coded case and cylinder. The 3912416 was definitely supplied coded with key.
