I have a box full of balancers for 283's. Some have riveted pulleys attached, some set up for bolt on's. I'm working on a 57 FI car and the balancer is off of the motor that came in the car. It's a 548 with the EL suffix. Production date of the car was Feb 1957. What balancer/pulley is correct? Does it require the spacer to align crank to water pump pulleys? Thanks

Re: 57 Fuelie Harmonic balancer
Tom,
I hesitated to respond to this thread, because my engine in my '57 FI with it's original EL block first assembled March 4, 1957 has been overhauled at least twice without regard to correctness. So what I have might not be what you want if you want it correct.
My pulley is bolted on:
I'm not sure if there's a spacer or not:
Hope this helps.- Top

Re: 57 Fuelie Harmonic balancer
The EL code represents a 283 horsepower FI motor with manual trans. and thus should have a 1/2'' bolted on balancer pulley. The numbers ''991'' should be stamped on the face of the pulley. The 1/2'' riveted pulleys were for lesser horse power motors as were the 3/8'' pulleys.- Top
