Does anyone have or know the approximate serial # that GM changed from the #059 generator on the 1959 290HP FI cars to the #173? I know my car serial #4388 has the #059. Just curious. Also, does anyone have detailed pictures of what the #173 generator looks like. I have one that has the tag on it for a 60 build date that I took off a 60 vette that I owned back in the early 90s (that would not charge), but the end plates look different than the #059 on my '59. The front plate of the #173 I have, is made of aluminum with a large rubber bushing with mounting hole at the front and a small hole in the rear plate about the same diameter as the #059 for mounting it to the bracket. I would just like to verify that the #173 is indeed a 173 or if it is something else that has the metal tag installed on it. The Delco tag has the following stamped into it 1102173 and 0B12 for the Feb 12, 1960 date which would have been correct for my old 60 290HP FI BB car which was built in March of 60, if I remember correctly. I think it had a serial # of 53??. Thanks for any help on the pictures and other info!! Al

Sounds like you have a 174 with a 173 tag. the 173 was solid mounted on the front frame and the 174 had a rubber bushing mount on the front, otherwise they were the same. the 173 is visually like the 268 and used the same end plates but has some internal differences.- Top
