i looked through the new JG--I apologize if I just missed it regarding the attachment of the dipstick tube bracket. Where it attaches to the exhaust manifold bolt, is that a bolt or is it a bolt with a threaded portion on top? If it is the latter, is there a nut and lockwasher, or flat and lock washers? How is that configured? Thanks

I believe it's just one of the exhaust manifold bolts with no washer(s) added. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 70-72 454 dipstick tube mounting question
Joe,
Would with/without a/c make any difference? I asked the question because i looked at a 72 with a/c that had a threaded on top bolt and is a pretty original car. I also looked at an original motor 71 without a/c (not as original--had headers at one point) that had a bolt, no top threads.- Top

I can't say, for sure, but I think it does make a difference with A/C. With A/C I think the rear compressor bracket is partially retained by a double-ended, flanged stud. One end of the stud replaces an exhaust manifold bolt. The other end retains one end of the bracket and I think that's the same position to which the dipstick tube is retained. Plain lockwashers are used.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 70-72 454 dipstick tube mounting question
it is a bolt w/o washer or lock washer.
on BB cars only the 4 most outside bolts were shoulder bolts.
the rest are no shoulder and no washer/lock washer.
no threaded upper section.

on 70 - 72 454 cars the threaded upper exhaust bolt was used on the DVR front outer for PS and on the PASS side up front for AC
and if your car is 72 you will also have the spark plug heat shield attaching sleeve between bolt and manifold.
