Really need original 6V battery info 53-55
When updating the 53-55 Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide we did not have access to any original 6 volt batteries. Now that we have more time to look we are still seeking any info and photos you may have of the OEM battery.
We are pretty sure of what it looks like except on the bottom of the case. But there is a lot of uncertainty on the date code - configuration and location.
The date code pictured in the manual is from a replacement battery that was probably made in 1959. It shows J9C. Not sure how to interpret that. In later years it was Year-Month-Plant. But J9C certainly does not follow that convention. Also I have a vintage Delco replacement with a code of R4X. While X is a known plant (Brunswick, NJ) and 4 could be the year there is no way that R could be a month. So we really need help in understating what the date code and plant info might have been put on the OEM Delco 6V batteries.
Also the photo in the manual shows the codes stamped into the rubber. One member who claims to have an original battery says the OEM batteries had the date code stamped into the lead cell connection straps, which were exposed and not buried under the tar like on the replacement batteries.
