Can anybody tell me the significance (if any) of this number 4262 written in white crayon under the hood of the this 1979? The car is almost 100% original and I would like to know if this is something done at the factor or if it's worth keeping. The car was built 5/79. VIN 1Z8749S437610

Could be the job number. The job number was used in the body shop to track body components as they were built. If you have a build sheet, look in the upper left-hand corner under schedule information. Or, look under the passenger side under body panel. See if the number matches.Tom Russo

Re: Crayon Number Marking Under Original Hood 1979 L82
Tom,
Searched the entire build sheet and nothing even close to the number 4262 anywhere. Where under the passenger side under body panel should I be looking? Under the car or inside the car under the carpeting?
Much thanks.- Top

Crawl up under where the starter is and look at the footwell portion of the passenger side floorboard. You'll see yellow grease pencil marks...should be a number that matches to the build sheet...this is your job number.Tom Russo

Re: Crayon Number Marking Under Original Hood 1979 L82
Yeah...803 should be hand-scrawled in yellow grease pencil on the passenger side under body panel. The 95 is the schedule number. By the late 1970s, workers did not work off the build sheet but had what they called a low-run sheet that looked like an Excel spreadsheet with unit numbers, and broadcast codes. Each day workers might work off a few schedules to see what jobs were coming up next...like paint schemes, FE7 suspension.etc.
The 06-01 is the "expected date of production" or when the body would begin assembly. Usually, this date coincides with the trim tag date code by a day or two.Last edited by Tom R.; June 6, 2017, 12:42 AM.Tom Russo
