C2 Accelerator Pedal Rod support

Quick question for a C2. On the accelerator pedal rod support that bolts to the firewall/transmission tunnel and the pedal rod fits through, which way is it supposed to be oriented: longer end of the tube inside the driver's compartment or out? I believe it is supposed to be in, but my was bent up and probably been taken apart before so I want to make sure I am getting back in correctly.

Remove the bolts? I don't NEED to remove no stinkin' bolts.
