removal of engine for timing chain on C4

I am thinking about replacing my timing chain on my 1984. However I just read and article stating that without removal of the engine, it is almost impossible to to replace the timing case cover without having and oil leak where the cover and oil pan meet. Has anyone had a issue of oil leaking after replacing the timing chain on a small block 350? This sounds crazy to me.

Not available to me right now, but my 1985 Corvette GM service manual might be some help in replacing the timing chain. If the oil pan can be removed without removing the engine the timing cover possibly be removed without removing the engine.

In my 1984 FSM it says nothing about removing the oil pan when replacing the timing chain. As I understand the 1984 and 1985 are the same engine except for the injection system. I have also seen a video on a small block Chevy ( not sure the year and it could of been a 305) and the guy making the video said, could someone please tell him how to get the timing case cover back on the engine. He said he searched the web and found no one with such information. Is there some kind of lip that makes getting the cover back on impossible without a oil leak ??

If you try to remove and replace the front cover without first removing the oil pan, you'll probably end up with a leak.
