C1 Spare Tire to Tall when laying in the spare tire tub - 1956

I recently failed my PV in Iowa on my 1956, C1 Corvette, in part because my spare tire is too tall when laying in the spare tire tub in the trunk, causing the spare tire board to sit a little above the recesses in the trunk floor and not flush. At first I thought it was my reproduction tires so I found an old non -DOT tire, the correct size and tried that. It still sits around 1/4" to 3/8" too high. Thoughts on how I can fix this?

I had to let the air out of my spare to get the cover to sit flush. My tires are reproductions though.....

The same for my 1960. I think the only ones that fit correctly are the originals. Repo. replacements, including later issued non-DOT tires, suffer from the same problem.

Does it do any good on the non-DOT, non-repro to seat the bead at 30 lbs psi and then bleed air down to about 15 psi? I guess that I'm not exactly sure that the "fit" of the trunk board is part of performance verification....

I thought about that as well when I read the message. Judging is not my strong point, so who knows?

Hi Pete.. I too had an original spare that came with my car for my 60... same thing too tall for the repo board. I let the air out and let it sit in the sun for a day ... next day put 20 to 25 psi in. Perfect fit.. even still good enough to get me out of trouble if i had a flat.
