1955 Corvette Air Cleaner Wing Nut ID

    Hi all,

After purchasing some odd lots to get two 56-57 wingnuts for a 1957 2x4 project i am working on, I have a couple of extra 56-57 wingnuts, so I am trying to definitively determine whether they were also used on 1955 V8's or whether some other type was used in 1955? Are these what was used in 1955 on V8 air cleaners or was another type used? If another type, does anyone have a picture of what was used for 1955 V8's?

    Thanks,

    Bob

The style wing nut you show is a type B which came into usage on late 56 dual quad engines. 1955 used a type A wing nut very common and used since 1934/36.

an original wing nut for 55 might be a little thinner in the ears, but the wing nut posted is the one used on the 1955 corvette V8 air cleaner. base is approximately the size of a dime. See thread "1955 Wing Nut", Feb 23, 2010.

        John,
Could you provide a part number for the this 55 wing nut you indicate was used on the 55 Corvette/Passenger car engine?

          Hi all,

I just looked at the "1955 Wing Nut" thread. David Smith posted a pic from his '57 Bowtie and it is the same as in my pictures. The 56-57 JG and head honchos say they are correct for 1956-57. Roy Braatz says he has one on his '55, but I don't know if that means it is original to 1955 or to 53-54 or whenever air cleaner wing nuts were used. I'm attaching the specs for the 56-57 wing nut in my pics. It would be interesting to see similar specs for what was used on 1955 and earlier.

            John,

For 56-57, I am going by what the 56-57 guys have shown me in person, what I've seen on Bowtie cars, the specs I posted, and that the JG says 56-57 for the wingnut in my pics. I'd like to think the one in the pic in the 53-55 JG was the same as mine since I'd have a wider application, but with a 56-57 one in my hand, the pic in the 53-55 just doesn't look quite the same, but I have some that do look like the pic in the 53-55 JG. A penny is 0.75 inch. My 56-57 wingnut is 1.25 inch. If you use the penny as a scale for the '55 wingnut next to it, it is just over an inch, so isn't the same as my pic.

You'd think someone out there must have a 53-55 Corvette and knows what was used?

            Bob

Here is a pic of the 53-55 JG page showing the scale of the wingnut compared with the penny.

The blueprint description you have attached to this thread is part #3736162. According to that blueprint this particular wing nut was designed 3-13-56 which would make it somewhat questionable for use in 1955. Can you provide another part number for 1955?
