    67 bolt on wheel removal

Need some help before a get the hammer out!

It has been a long time since I had to remove a wheel from my 67. It has bolt on repros. Trying to pry the center cap assembly off, but it is stuck on 1 clip. Is there a trick to getting it off? I can not even tell why it is stuck, the other clips separated from the wheel easily. Any advice? Thanks.

Go on each side of the stuck clip, and slowly tease it up going back-and-forth until you see it start to lift. I always use a soft towel with a flat head screw driver So as to minimize any damage. Good luck

John, we will not be able to get under the clip. Go to the left and right of the clip as you will have more leverage to tease it up.

If that does not work, my suggestion would be to push the starburst back into place completely. Then try to tease up The stuck clip using the same method I described. There may be too much torque on that clip now that the other clips have been lifted out.

The clip is situated between the fins, so I can not get a screwdriver on the side to tease it. Will still try pushing cap back on.

Still no luck. Going to try to find a seal puller or other device to pull in such a tight spot. Any other ideas?

                  John,
Have you attempted to remove the center cap ornament? One of the reproduction wheels uses a retainer under the starburst that is bolted to the wheel, then the starburst is installed, and a center bolt is put in place to hold the starburst. Then the ornamental center cap is snapped on...just a thought.

yes the American Finest repro wheels the outer most part is screwed into the cap. the first design was plastic and the later part was metal. then the cap is bolted to the wheel. you have to unbolt the center to remove the wheel

Success!! Used this tool to get behind the fin and pull, see photo. You would not believe the amount of force I had to use to pull that last clip off. I will definitely be keeping this tool with my jack tools in case I get a flat on the road. Can't imaging trying to change a tire and not being able to get the center cap assembly off. Hope this helps others.

Thanks for all the input from you guys!!

Try a mini "magic bar" or the end of a "church key" used to open drink bottle caps.
