Judging Scoring Question, Section 2 Mechanical, Cylindar Case Date issue!

In scoring the section 2 on the mechanical set of sheets:
Suppose that Section A Cast # and case is good.
But the casting date is NOT readable. It should be.
    How to score this?
Option 1: Benefit of the doubt = slash,
    or
Option 2: Deduct of 175 points (don't score sections C and D stamp pad).

    Thoughts?
    Issues?
    Controversies?

    Thanks TONY

That's a tough one if the casting date is illegible. Is there an engine assembly date and suffix stamped on the pad?

would also be looking at Trim tag for build date of car; other obvious parts with date codes; anything to ascertain approximate casting date; VIN will also provide approximate cast date

That is a "consult with the Team Leader" situation Tony.

If the casting date is illegible do to an accumulation of dirt in oil the scoring would not be in the owners favor. The manual states that the owner has a responsibility to make sure the pad and the cast number and date are clean as they would have been when the car rolled off the line with dealer prep..

If the casting date is illegible due to "stickers" as the late Mark Gorney a long time GM Central Foundry in Saginaw employee has explained in the past occurred and other dates and configurations line up then the owner would likely benefit for the "benefit of the doubt".

"Sticker" occurred when sand fell out in the date and casting number area thus giving an obscured casting.

Good points Dan, you are correct, but I still hold that it is time for the judges to consult with the Team Leader. I would expect the Team Leader to apply the logic you have stated as well as looking at the stamp pad to try to decide if the cylinder case could be original or a "convenient replacement."

All good points and it may not end with the team leader. One such casting date issue arose at a regional with the judges and (a former) team leader not in agreement as to a final disposition. The national judging chairman was asked for input to resolve the stalemate. The detailed results were written on the judging sheet and the owner was advised to carry the judging sheet to future meets for clarification if any questions came up. Our judging system works very well when all the procedures are used on the judging field.

Anybody gonna comment on the 63 SN tag being attached with Rosette Rivets. Should it not be spot welded?

                      Just an observation!

What tag are you looking at? The one RM posted is perfectly fine.

Chip, I asked that question here many years ago. The engine had yellow paint under the original Orange when I got it in Dec 2007. 67k original title documented miles.

In Jan 08, wifey drove it to Kissimmee for the Regional to get it looked at for Bowtie eval. I'll check the sheets to see comments on cast date as well as the yellow, I forget what transpired.
