    C3 Power steering

What is the purpose of a grease fitting on the power steering pump? Is this standard on a 1977 vette?

Never seen one on a pump, any year.

As Mike says, there is no grease fitting on any Corvette power steering pump. However, if you are actually referring to the grease fitting on the power steering control valve, that fitting is to grease the ball stud on the adapter. I do not recommend that this fitting EVER be used. Using it can cause major problems with the valve.

Then why was it placed there?

I think it was included to ensure folks would need to buy a new valve. Just kidding (I hope). If one is careful to introduce only about a teaspoon of grease, one might get away without damaging the valve. I say might.

Interesting, subscribed. We are in the process of a total power steering system rebuild in a 68 including a new control valve. So if its new and doesn't have any grease I should add some then forget it for the most part...correct? I'll treat it like a Universal joint and be real careful to not over grease. I think I will also install a zerk plug so our general service mechanic doesn't grease it when we're too lazy and have him do the oil/grease service.

I'd be surprised if a new valve doesn't come already greased. I wouldn't add additional grease without checking.

How is the valve damaged when greased?

I've greased mine a couple of times since it was replaced; what should I be looking for?

The control valve is actually comprised of 2 assemblies-----the valve and the adapter. The adapter contains the ball stud, ball stud seats and other parts. The adapter is the component that includes the grease fitting. If too much grease is injected into the adapter, it will get by the seals between the adapter and valve and get into the valve causing fluid leaks or, even, failure of the valve. The adapter is designed to be "dry" of power steering fluid; the valve is designed to be "dry" of grease.

Dry it is. I think I'll put a zerk plug in place of the zerk. I can see myself in a hurry pumping grease into it. Makes one question why its even there in the first place.
