Also, in the 4th and 5th from last photos, the outboard passenger side splash shield does not have the "filler tab" that seems to appear randomly with L78's. This was discussed on a Corvette Forum thread on May 9th. I'm not implying that this means it's not a born-with 396.- Top

Jim -- the only other one I've heard of was Jack Humphrey's 396 Maroon coupe; he had it at the Sun Valley ID nationals in 1999. If memory serves, he didn't know what it was (during restoration) and replaced it ! Of course Critter1 (M.H. ?) over on CF also has seen them. They seem to be in the category of hen's teeth.- Top

Re: 1965 396 Conv. 21013 Block Stamp
There's nothing in the 1965 A.I.M. calling for a different splash shield in either the L-78 or C-60 sections. It would be interesting to find out if/when/why a very few BB 65's ended up with the modified shield. We'll probably never know.
I saw the posts by Critter1 and he is confused about the shields with the added metal being used with side exhaust. There's lots of misinformation on that site.
"These modified panels were originally used on 63 and later cars with A/C but were later also used for 65 and later with side mounted exhaust."- Top

And it's a shame, really. So easy to check -- (to all 396/L78 owners) Lift the hood, look vertically down, between the rear of the expansion tank and the female hood latch mechanism and you should see this, with or without the weatherstrip along the straight frame edge.
Tab is tack welded onto the shield to fill the indentation. Let us know.

Re: 1965 396 Conv. 21013 Block Stamp
Thanks Stewart. So far we have 2 known original cars built early May that don't have them and 2 late July/early Aug. that do. We can assume that the unexplained/undocumented change occurred between these two time periods.- Top
