Question on how much paint is on the bell housing

Guys,

I'm getting ready to attach the bell housing to the motor (69 350/350) and had a question on the amount of the paint found on the bell housing. My judging guide says there is overspray on the bell housing but I recall someone posting that the bell housings were completely painted. My JG says the 427 bell housings were fully painted so I wonder if that's what that person was referring to. If it's just over spray then was it just the first couple of inches of the bell housing? Thanks for your guidance.

For small blocks, the complete bellhousing was usually not painted. Usually, paint extends about 2-4 inches back from the engine. It varied widely, though.

Cars with standard transmissions had some overspray on the bell housing. How much depends on the person who painted it. I have seen original cars that had the whole bell housing painted and some that had minimal overspray. Usually the painter used a side to side motion and went around the back to cover the rear portion of the engine. What ever got it with paint got painted as it was not to be painted intentionally. Obviously automatic transmission cars did not receive paint on their bell housing. My findings come from numerous conversations with workers at the Flint Engine Assembly plant and Tonawanda Engine Plant workers as well. This information was backed up by observing Survivor/Bowtie vehicles.
