Tarpon Springs is not exactly a ghetto.

Well, apparently it has some bad areas. If you read the entire thread te OP has more to say about "hot spots."

          Re: Be aware !

Fort Worth has a lot of areas that are undergoing gentrification and at least one such area has started hosting an annual car show to sort of promote the area. I didn't go because I'm familiar with the proximity of social service agencies. I won't participate in a car show that I haven't visited as a spectator first or am at least familiar with the location and hosting organization. I try to avoid car shows that are a part of some other event, like our neighborhood has a car show associated with a Fall Festival. Its one thing to go to a car show for gearheads, but the generic family crowd has no idea how to behave around classic cars and certainly never taught their children not to get cotton candy on someone's car. Not to mention the crime risk of being exposed to a wider audience. Its sad because part of me wants to promote the hobby to the next generation (I got hooked on cars at like age 3 or 4) or try to inspire underprivileged youth, but when you've spent money that you couldn't really afford to spend in the first place then you don't want to take risks.

What mostly worries me though is driving home at night after a show. I take the back roads to avoid driving past certain locations. If I think I'm being followed, I don't go home till I'm sure I'm not being tailed. I'm personally aware of multiple stories of thieves targeting car collectors and especially gun collectors, after tailing them and casing their homes and shops. If the show venue itself doesn't bother you, please at least be aware of being followed home after a car show.

Well there is a distinction between being in personal danger at a car event vs spectators just being jerks...

I took my '61 to Disney Car Masters twice - met Chip Foose there. The above post is spot on. It was a melee with kids hopped up on sugar-laden candy and the whole "Happiest Place on Earth" hype. My car survived both times but I won't ever go again.

I just went these two times because a friend was sponsoring it and needed some nice cars to get the show established...

Also quit attending "Old Town" in Kissimmee, FL. I'm not a jerk about guarding my car, but the crowd there has gotten rougher over the years, lots of clueless foreigners and after you tell the same person three times not to touch your car, I tend to get a little vocal. Then when I returned from dinner with friends and a nearby fellow car owner told me somebody puked on my split window's fender while I was gone (and he was right) that was it.

Enough is enough. I'll got to cruise-ins where appreciative fellow gear heads predominate but avoiding the more generic shows...

Lot of food for thought here. It's a sad commentary on our times. Many years ago someone slit the top on my convertible. It may have been a senseless act of vandalism...maybe someone had a grudge against me...a distinct possibility...or someone was just ticked that I had a Corvette and they didn't...who knows? Bottom line, if you don't feel comfortable having your car somewhere...best not to take it there.
