Keith was the painted surface on the back of door?

        No its like aluminium,
I always thought the front of the door was a plastic coating , the scratch was enough to get your nail in , so I rubbed it down with 1200 grit and bang / end up with a visible mark / wish I never touched it now, is the 63 door painted silver ?

i always thought the backside of the 63 door had the paint. and the front was clear, So when you sanded the front the paint was removed? I think the backside had silver paint. I have a spare 63 door I am going to take a closer look.

Keith, So I had a look at the spare OE door and the silver paint is on the back side. the front of the door appears to be clear plastic. If you want a quick pic. send me your email, with a PM.

Ed, just looked at my original door to verify. Yep clear plastic on the front and the paint is on the back.

Keith, if you sanded and hit aluminum you probably don't have a 63 door. Also, if you run your fingers over the word Corvette and you can feel the word, not a 63 door.

You certainly aren't the first to turn a small issue into a regrettable situation - don't kick yourself too much...
Since what you have may not be original anyway I'd be tempted to try the 64 door....

I HAVE seen 63 glove box pieces show up on eBay occasionally and replaced my bunged up rear door portion with an original I bought there.

By now I'm sure you see that you don't have a 63 glove box door. The clear plastic front is glued to a fiberglass back. And yes, the clear from is painted on the back side with silver.
I have some pictures if you need them for clarification as I have both the back and front (somewhere).
