You can never dispute taste or preference...there is no right or wrong. Bottom line...the harder something is to come by...the more someone who really wants it is going to be willing to pay. I have a '72 conv...it's a really nice car. But, it wouldn't be all that hard to find another '72 conv. that's just as nice. However, finding a '72 911 or a '72 Jag. E, in as nice a condition, would definitely be more difficult.

I also think that Porsche has more of a "World Market" of collectors, while Corvettes have more of "USA Market" of collectors.

And while this may or may not have anything to do with world values of cars, I've met way too many people in the Corvette world that would rather own, repair or fix their Corvettes the CHEAPEST way possible instead of the right way. If you don't want to spend $20 on a needed part, you probably shouldn't own a car in the first place. I don't see that in the Porsche world.

Unfortunately, there's far more truth than poetry in what you say. But, then again, it comes down to taste and preference. I've always tried to keep my car as original as possible. I bought my car 1n 1985. I'm the 3rd owner. In 1989 I came to find out the frame was bad. (it took that long for the camouflage the 2nd owner had put on to trade the car in to wear off) I located a new frame, trailing arms and 'A" frames for that car in various GMPD warehouses. (I worked for GM so I had plenty of help) My point is, over the past 30+ years I've put more money into that car than I, or my estate will ever get out of it. But, who cares...it's not for sale. Anyway, that was my preference. The car still has the original paint, chrome and glass. It still has all the original stamped running components. (they've all been worked on...the right way) Was it smart to do that on a low optioned base convertible? Maybe not...but when I throw the top back, get in that old car and go shifting down the road...I feel good.

Hate to say it but after restoring a old porshe for a customer , it ended up with more glass over the rusted metal than vettes were made of.
You could see the pavement under the car from inside and had to watch where you stepped so you could keep your feet inside.
That made me love the fiberglass car more. The porshe was a CA car also. If I remember it was a 67 and had a 4 cylinder in it. The kid that owned it said it would leave my 67 vette in the dust! That was it, I gave him a ride in my 67 and had to clean the right seat when he got out.
All in all, I hate rust and after sand blasting his porshe there were lines of rust holes from trapped mud, even in the roof thru the rear window posts.
There wasn't much a magnet would stick to when I was done. It did come out looking nice for the rust bucket it was. I would think that if it lived where they salted the roads the porshe should have came with a SS shovel so it could be properly disposed of.

...which would increase demand compared with Corvette. Combine with less supply, and you have a higher price. Logical, but for me, still surprising demand is greater for Porsche.

Don't get me wrong. I admire the engineering that Porsche represents. And I like the evolutionary style of the 911 over the years. Newer models have awesome performance, yet pay homage to their past design.

This blend of old style with modern engineering reminds me of the Corvette restomods combining an older body with a modern chassis. It's a formula I wish Chevrolet would consider.

                Mark,
I was told that Dontov designed both Corvette models and Porshe?

Someone along the way mentioned the Mopar rise and fall, similar run-ups and coolings have occurred with other makes. I'm enough of a skeptic to believe that sudden interest in a particular brand or type accompanied by a substantial increase in price is not a question of supply and demand, but rather the result of the auction houses hyping the market. Selecting something of low value and creating an artificial demand can create huge profits over the span of several years and when that particular product has been milked for much more that it is reasonable worth, it's time for the auctioneers to move on to another car. It might be fun to be on the inside and listen to the conversations between the auctioneers when they agree on what their next brand will be.

Saw an episode of Chasing Classic cars last night. Carini's 1973 Porsche 911 Targa S sold for over $200K including commissions. Nothing rare or special about it, but it had been newly restored to factory delivered specs.

A quick comparison of 1973 911 and Corvette below. New, the 911 was almost 2x the price of Corvette, and sold half as many. Today, maybe 5x - 10x the price?

Too many c3's and while body style was gee whiz at time, it hasn't stood the test of time for desireability. And if I might say, I think some like Porsches for the snob appeal and fact they cost more.

As someone who owned a '72 911T, among other cars, I can say it had the best steering feel of any car I have ever driven. The sound was fantastic, as well.

I had not heard about any design work he did for Porsche, but he did drive an 1100cc Porsche 550 RS Spyder to class wins at LeMans in '54 and '55.

FWIW, I listed my 70 L-46 (4 Chap. TF's & 2 Reg. TF's) for sale on two well known Corvette websites in Jan. & Feb.. After approx. 3500 hits/visits of the ads I've had zero interest. One person e-mailed for my phone #, I responded, but I never received a call back.

If it ever sells (and I don't have to pay someone to take it), I'd really like to get a Porsche.

Years ago, I rode in my buddy's Porsche 959. It was waaaaay faster than any Corvette. I believe he sold it in the 7 figure range.
