    30-30 Valve Adjustment HELP

I am trying to use the valve setting procedure as outlined by John Hinckley & Duke Williams for my L84 engine. Something isn't right but I can't seem to identify. This is with a new CS-118R Federal Mogul cam. As an example, when the crank is @ 90 degrees ATD it says to set the #1 intake but my valve is still partially open and not on the base circle. I have verified the cam and crank gear are lined up on the marks when #1 is @ TDC. I'm stumped.

If by the "cam and crank gear are lined up" you mean that the marks on each sprocket align with the crank mark at 12:00 o'clock and the cam mark at 6:00 o'clock, that's not #1 at TDC on the compression stroke. It's #6 at TDC on the compression stroke. It's an often-held misconception that it's #1 at TDC on the compression stroke. A very long time ago I made the mistake of believing that, too, and it caused me untold grief. You can set the marks at the above-referenced orientation but then you need to rotate the engine 360 crankshaft degrees to have the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke.
    In Appreciation of John Hinckley

I just did the same proceedure on my L84 and it worked fine. Are you sure you were at TDC to start? I had my plugs out and could feel the presure as it came up on TDC.

Joe: Yes, by saying I have the marks lined up is exactly as you describe. Of all the SBC engines I have rebuilt over the last 40 years I never knew that was #6 TDC and NOT #1 TDC. So it all makes sense now and I'm sure everything will work after I turn it over 360 before I start adjusting. I guess you are never too old to learn. Many thanks for educating me !!!!! Don
