    1973 Replace original radio speakers.

Need to replace the left and right stereo radio speakers in my 1973 Corvette. After 44 years, the quality of sound and balance is bad. I would like to upgrade and replace the behind the dash speakers. (1) Is that a difficult task ? (2) I don't believe it will impact NCRS points judging if I replace them (yes or no)? Comments and suggestions appreciated.

Re: 1973 Replace original radio speakers.

I replaced both speakers in my 74' a few years ago. I believe I purchased them from Volunteer Corvette Products since theirs were of the correct resistance and had OEM mating connectors on the speaker wires. As I recall I had to very slightly open up the speaker mounting holes to install them. The speakers were also of the correct overall height ,which is important, as the vertical space between the dashpad and the main instruments is tight.
I think you will find that the easiest way to install the speakers is to remove the dash pad from the car. The passenger side is no problem to access the speaker with the dashpad in the car but the drivers side is very difficult. Also you may find that you need to so some epoxy repairs to the holes in the dashpad that attach the speakers and I can't imagine doing that repair while the dashpad is installed. I cannot comment on NCRS judging but the speakers cannot be seen so I do no know how they could be judged.

The speakers aren't judged. But the dash pad is.

Patrick's recommendation above is correct. I used them about 3 years ago and they are great speakers and a great company...Don

Did the factory use cloth over the speakers?

              Mark,
Here is a pair of OEM speakers being sold as cores, and you can see that they had cloth on them from the factory. The 'X' imprint is visible from the mounting bracket.
