    Power steering conversion problem

A friend has a 63 corvette convertible and he is trying to install a power steering conversion kit. The engine block is a 3959512. The pulleys at the power steering pump and the water pump do not line up. They are off by about 1/2 inch. I noticed that the timing tab is located about 1/2 inch from the back of the harmonic balancer. I always remembered the timing tab to be located at the very back edge of the balancer. Now, the harmonic balancer could be the wrong one. Since this is an odd block I am not sure what to do to align the pulleys. Could we put a spacer behind the current harmonic balancer; try another harmonic balancer ??? All comments are appreciated.

A small block chevy engine is a small block chevy engine, I am guessing you don't have the correct water pump for the original 63 application which should be a 608 for low horse engines. There is a lot of discussion on the correct pump for high horse applications but in any event they should line up the same. You may have an issue with the oil pan clearance also if you don't find a correct oil pan. If the car was originally a manual steering car you should relocate the tie rod ends at the wheels also.

The engine block will make no difference, at all, in regard to a power steering application. The balancer won't make any difference, either, as long as it's a stock-type GM balancer or equivalent thereof.

What pulleys are being used on the waterpump, balancer, and power steering pump? There should be GM part numbers on them.
